WHAT YOU LEARN IN AN ALEXANDER LESSON.

The Alexander Lesson begins with whatever question you bring into the session to explore. .. maybe an uncomfortable tightness, stiffness or pain from repetitive movements. You might even think of this as another therapeutic option when others have failed. Very soon you acquire an embodied skill where you recognize how you set yourself wrong and can make choices for change.

This skill smooths communication and enhances your relationship with anything in your world. Or… you might learn what is possible in our human consciousness to improve performance in any realm from music art theatre sports, relationship, carriage and appearance.

Lessons can include demonstration, practice and hands-on work on a fully clothed body.

Notice we are talking not about posture, but unposturing. ( Bruce Fertman) The teacher guides the student’s neuromuscular system toward a falling away of habits of holding. Students learn to recognize their habits and make different choices. They learn to delay reactions for better choice of response.

You learn to move again from a baseline of muscle tone rather than collapsed or rigid muscles, a rigidity that is often held unconsciously.

Experience on Zoom has demonstrated that Alexander Technique principles can be learned through demonstration and practice alone. You experience a way of being that is closer to your evolutionary design - usually a lighter freer and more spacious sense of yourself.

Students are heard to say: “ a different sense of me, more space to move in, a feeling of expansion, lightness, joy” ” Stiffness and pain are often relieved. Movement is more fluid, everything takes less effort.

Individual lessons are 45-60 minutes, groups 50 min. Students are encouraged to take what they have learned in their neuromuscular systems into their everyday activities and relationships.

As pandemic precautions allow, I am planning an 8 session Series in person in Durham NH called Coming to Full Stature with the Alexander Technique. ( see Contact)
